Today is World Encephalitis Day 🧠 This is my story

Twelve years ago, I was asked to share my story on one of the biggest shows in the world. I was nervous and unsure whether it was the right thing to do, because I had never spoken about it before.

I spoke about my encephalitis journey — an inflammation of the brain.

At the time, I couldn’t speak, read, write, or walk. I had just completed my first year at university and had been given the leading role in the university opera when I was diagnosed.

Returning to normal life was a slow process. It required patience, persistence, and faith.

But music never left me. It was always there, quietly supporting me and helping me move forward. The power of music is undeniably magical — a gift from above that carried me when I needed it most.

Today, I receive so many kind and inspiring messages from around the world. I’m truly grateful. If sharing my experience can give strength or hope to someone going through their own journey, then it was worth speaking about it 🙏 #encephalitis #bringmetolife #britainsgottalent #braininflames

🎶 The Story of “Misirlou”

“Misirlou” (Μισιρλού) means Egyptian girl in Greek.
It’s not originally from Pulp Fiction — it’s a Greek folk song from the 1920s, inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean’s mix of Greek, Arabic, and Turkish melodies.

It began as a slow, passionate love song about an unattainable exotic woman.
Then, in the 1940s, it became a Greek-American rebetiko hit.
In the 1960s, Dick Dale, the “King of Surf Guitar,” transformed it into a fiery instrumental — giving it that electric surf-rock sound Tarantino later used in Pulp Fiction (1994).

So when people hear Misirlou and think of Tarantino…
They’re actually hearing a Greek melody with Middle Eastern roots, reborn through decades of reinvention.
